We are looking for a Senior Controls Engineer within the Software and Controls department. This is a critical role for delivering a unique power delivery technology across multiple markets and future generations.

The software and controls team is organised as an agile team specialised in using Model Based Design methodology and development tools to bring together multiple domain controllers together into a unified solution.

This role involves design and delivery of models for grid and motor control using MATLAB Simulink, which will involve interacting with other teams within Rimac Technology and working very closely with colleagues within the Software & Control team. The control models will be designed for and utilised in the application layer of the software for which code generation tools will be exploited.


1. Responsibilities

Specific job responsibilities will depend upon the active project, and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, and implement advanced controls solutions for multiple domain controllers.
  • Evaluate existing control strategies and propose and develop enhancements; this could be enhancing PID control-based strategies with cascade control, feedforward, gain-scheduling, etc. or applying a different, more-suitable model-based control algorithm (i.e., model predictive control, internal model control, etc.).
  • Work closely with across departments to define appropriate hardware and software platforms for implementing control solutions.
  • Lead projects and work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls.
  • Safety-related control system design, implementation, validation, and sustainment; along with all associated design and documentation deliverables
  • Assist and contribute to the generation of targets and verification methods that are driven by Customer, Function Requirements and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
  • Supporting the development of projects through the V model
  • Implementation of technology, design, demonstrators, models, and validation strategies
  • Delivery of controls and sub-systems across the range of products
  • Provide technical support and assistance across the operational team on topics relating to the integration and harmonisation of multiple interconnected components including issue resolution and objective data analysis
  • Engagement with key project stakeholders around the business to gather requirements, development, and integration
  • Engagement with supplier to explore and collaborate to deliver solution


2. Requirements

  • Masters or PhD in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, preferably with coursework focus on Advanced Controls, Data Analytics, or Optimization.
  • 3 -5 years of experience in industry for grid and/or motor application.
  • Familiarity with a diverse array of process controls technologies ranging from classical PID control to modern control techniques.
  • Grid voltage and Motor control along with their related domain requirements
  • Practical application of classical control theory, including PID control loop tuning.
  • Programming experience in Matlab/Simulink.
  • Ability to translate advanced control process solutions into PLC code and/or real-time control applications written in C or C++.
  • Strong technical curiosity with desire to take on challenging technical problems
  • Controls-oriented modeling (system identification).
  • Ability to learn a process quickly, that includes identifying process variables, existing controls solution, process specifications and limitations.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prepare and present effectively to audiences from different backgrounds.


3. Considered as an advantage

  • Familiarity and/or coursework in signal processing
  • Experience working in or leading cross-functional teams
  • Background in basic machine learning
  • Multiple Software Language skills in Python
  • Model Based Language expertise - SysML
  • Experience in Automotive Engineering Delivery and in solving complex technical issues using a structured approach
  • Experience on below toolchain CANape, CAN analyzer, Control Desk, Corvus, ECU Diagnostics
  • requirement capturing tools
