About Rimac Energy

Rimac Energy is a rapidly growing division of Rimac Group, developing next-generation battery energy storage and power conversion technology for grid-scale and commercial energy applications. Building on Rimac’s expertise in battery systems, power electronics and software, we are developing highly integrated BESS and PCS products for deployment across global markets, with an initial focus on the United States followed by Europe.

We are looking for an experienced engineer to take a leading role in the compliance, validation and certification of these products.

The Role

The Grid Compliance & Certification Lead will own and drive the technical compliance and certification strategy for Rimac Energy’s battery energy storage and power conversion systems. The role is particularly suited to an engineer with experience in grid-connected power electronics, including PCS, solar inverters, BESS, UPS, drives or similar high-power electrical systems. We are particularly interested in candidates who have practical experience applying standards such as UL 1741, EN 50549, IEC 62477 and IEC 61508, ideally through the development, validation or certification of grid-connected power conversion equipment.

A key focus of the role will be translating grid interconnection, electrical safety, functional safety, EMC and certification requirements into clear engineering requirements, validation plans and certification activities. You will work closely with Engineering, Validation & Test, Systems, Software, Supply Chain, Industrialisation and external certification bodies to ensure our products are designed and validated for deployment across multiple international markets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the product compliance and certification roadmap for Rimac Energy BESS and PCS products.
  • Identify, interpret and maintain applicable standards, grid interconnection requirements and regulatory requirements for target markets.
  • Lead North American PCS and grid-interconnection certification activities, with particular focus on UL 1741 and associated requirements.
  • Lead European grid compliance activities, including requirements associated with EN 50549 and equivalent market-specific requirements.
  • Lead product electrical safety compliance activities, including requirements associated with IEC 62477 and related power-conversion safety standards.
  • Support development and implementation of the product functional safety strategy, including application of IEC 61508 where appropriate.
  • Translate standards, regulatory and certification requirements into clear product requirements, acceptance criteria and verification activities.
  • Lead technical engagement with certification bodies, test laboratories, utilities and other relevant external organisations.
  • Define and support execution of compliance and certification testing at internal and external test facilities.
  • Develop and support execution of Design Validation Plans covering grid compliance, electrical safety, EMC, functional safety and other certification requirements.
  • Review test results, technical evidence and certification documentation to confirm compliance and identify technical gaps.
  • Work directly with power electronics, controls, software and systems engineering teams to resolve compliance issues identified during development and testing.
  • Monitor changes to relevant standards and regulations and assess their impact on current and future products.
  • Support wider regulatory requirements including CE marking, RoHS, REACH and associated technical documentation for European markets.
  • Develop scalable internal processes for requirements capture, compliance evidence, traceability and certification documentation.

Required Experience

  • Significant engineering experience within power electronics, renewable energy, grid-connected equipment or another highly regulated electrical industry.
  • Practical experience with grid-connected power conversion systems such as BESS PCS, solar inverters, UPS, drives or similar technology.
  • Experience taking electrical or power-electronic products through validation, compliance testing or formal certification.
  • Experience working with, interpreting or validating products against one or more of the following standards:
    • UL 1741 – Inverters, converters, controllers and interconnection system equipment
    • EN 50549 – Requirements for generating plants connected in parallel with distribution networks
    • IEC 62477 – Safety requirements for power electronic converter systems and equipment
    • IEC 61508 – Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems
  • Strong understanding of grid interconnection compliance and the validation of inverter-based generation or energy-storage systems.
  • Good understanding of electrical safety, EMC and power-electronic product compliance.
  • Experience coordinating testing with external laboratories, certification bodies or similar organisations.
  • Strong technical understanding of power electronics and high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Experience translating standards, legislation or regulatory requirements into engineering requirements and test specifications.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:

  • IEEE 1547 and North American grid-interconnection requirements.
  • US utility and market-specific interconnection requirements.
  • European grid-code frameworks beyond EN 50549.
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems.
  • IEC and UL certification programmes for high-power electrical equipment.
  • EMC compliance and pre-compliance testing.
  • Functional safety analysis, safety concepts, FMEA/FMEDA or safety integrity requirements.
  • Requirements management and traceability tools such as Jama, Polarion or similar.
  • Engineering quality processes such as APQP.
  • Certification or compliance of high-voltage battery systems.

Qualifications

A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Power Engineering, Physics or a related technical discipline is preferred.Equivalent professional experience within power electronics, grid systems, validation or product certification will also be considered.

The Person

We are looking for someone who:

  • Can operate as, or develop into, a technical authority for grid and product compliance.
  • Is comfortable working directly with engineering teams, hardware and test facilities rather than operating purely as a regulatory coordinator.
  • Can interpret complex standards and translate them into practical engineering requirements and test programmes.
  • Understands the relationship between product architecture, controls, software, power electronics and compliance performance.
  • Is capable of coordinating multiple validation and certification programmes across different markets.
  • Communicates confidently with engineers, suppliers, test laboratories and certification bodies.
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced product-development environment where products, processes and technical solutions are evolving.

Location

This role is preferably based at our Witney, Oxfordshire engineering facility in the UK, working closely with the product, test rigs and engineering teams. We are particularly interested in candidates who can work regularly on-site in Witney, as the role requires close interaction with hardware development, validation activities and certification test programmes.

Candidates based in Zagreb may also be considered where there is a particularly strong technical fit. Some travel to external laboratories, certification facilities, suppliers and other Rimac Energy locations should be expected.
